Synthroid to Thyroid - Finding a Doctor

Postby jeannie » Fri Jul 24, 2009 6:31 pm

Hello, I am sooo happy I found this site. I regrettably had RAI for graves and am now severely hypo. I am on 137mcg's of synthroid and feel terrible. I would really like to try 'Thyroid' and would like to know what would be an equivalent dose of 'thyroid' to 137 mcg's of synthroid? I have read your conversion chart but can't really make it out, sorry.

Also, I am in desperate search for a doctor in Edmonton, AB that will LISTEN to me. All my endo is concerned with are my numbers and synthroid. I have found a doctor but cannot get in until November! Oh my gosh, I just can't wait that long. I feel so terrible on synthroid. I really need help and just can't seem to find a doc that will listen to me and allow me to make my own decision with regards to treatment. If anyone knows of a doc in the area it would be so very much appreciated.

Again, I'm thrilled to have found out about 'Thyroid' and can't wait to try it. It's my last hope at getting my life back.

Regards,

Jeannie

Hello Jeannie and welcome to our forum,

Our Thyroid medication has been approved in Canada for more then 30 years now. Thousands of patients are on it. There is a conversion table that your doctir will use in order to be able to convert from levothyroxine to desiccated thyroid. In your case 137 mcg of Levothyroxine is the equivalent of 89mg of Thyroid. Thyroid comes in 30, 60 and 125mg dosage. Therefore you would have to take 1 tablet of 30mg and 1 of 60mg once a day.

Please tell your doctor that desiccated thyroid is approved by Health Canada and we could provide the product monograph if needed. Strangely, most of the endocrinologists are reticent when it comes to desiccated Thyroid even though some studies tends to demonstrate it is useful in some patients.

Hope you will feel better. Have a nice day.

Thanks so much Henri,

So I wrote a letter to my endo politely asking to please allow me to try 'thryoid' and you'll never believe it! Her response to me was "ask your gp to re-refer you to another endocronologist"!. She went on to say "I'm sorry our treatment (synthroid) is not working for you". Unbelieveable!

Oh well, it's for the best anyway. I don't want someone like that treating me anyway!

So I guess the search is on for a new doc.

Have a great day and thanks so much for this site :)

Hello there Jeannie,

Most endocrinologist do not believe in the virtue of Thyroid even if many patients as well as some medical litterature seems to believe differently. Your best option is to find an open minded doctor that will listen to you. Finding one is a hard task since there is a limited amount of resources in our health system.
Your best option is to print out the product monograph and ''educate'' the doctors about the existance of desiccated thyroid. Most of them will tell you no the first time but will eventually read on it and find out it is part of the treatment in many patients across the world.
This forum is also important because it compiles many testimonial of patients that actually notice a difference when switching to desiccated thyroid.
